High-Speed Catamarans Take Over Plymouth Sound as World Championships Begin

Britain’s Ocean City is currently playing host to the 2026 Nacra 15 World Championship, bringing together some of the world’s most talented young sailors.
The 2026 Nacra 15 World Championship runs from Saturday, 25 July to Saturday, 1 August 2026.
Dozens of international crews have made the journey to Devon for this prestigious youth regatta. The Nacra 15 serves as the official international youth mixed multihull—a crucial stepping stone for teenage athletes striving for future Olympic glory.
A World-Class Natural Arena
With tricky tidal currents, unpredictable winds, and centuries of maritime history, Plymouth Sound provides an ideal, highly natural amphitheatre for elite competition.
The event is being delivered through a joint effort between two local, volunteer-driven clubs:
- Plym Yacht Club (Oreston)
- Hooe Point Sailing Club
Based out of the Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre on the Cattewater, the organizers have welcomed sailors, support staff, and families from across the globe, showcasing Plymouth’s famous warm hospitality alongside world-class racing.

These competitors may be in their mid-to-late teens, but their skill levels are already formidable. Operating semi-foiling catamarans in mixed-gender teams, these young athletes are navigating the official pathway to international sporting success.
